On 13 January 2025, Thailand’s cabinet approved key changes to the Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa and SMART Visa programs to attract foreign professionals and investors. Once it is approved by the Council of State, House of Representatives, and Senate, it will be published in the Government Gazette. The changes are expected to go into effect in March 2025.

The LTR Visa is a long-term visa allowing you to stay for up to 10 years in Thailand. It boasts numerous benefits to facilitate settling long-term in the country such as tax exemptions and special work permit privileges.

1. LTR Visa

Ø Broadened Scope of Target Industries for Highly Skilled Professionals. The skilled professionals now include professors at university and vocational institutions in various fields.

Ø Remove the work experience requirement for both the Work-From-Thailand Professionals and Highly-Skilled Professionals tracks.

Ø Restrictions on the number of dependents for LTR visa holders will be eliminated, allowing spouses, parents, children, and legal dependents to be included without the previous cap of four.

Ø For “Work-from-Thailand” applicants, the employer’s required revenue will be reduced from USD150 million to USD50 million over three years. This is to expand the number of companies eligible to support remote workers. Therefore, even if your company is not a large corporation with nine-digit revenue, you still qualify for the LTR visa and can live and work remotely in Thailand.

2. SMART Visa

The Smart Visa is a special type of visa created to attract skilled professionals and investors who wish to work or invest in the country's target industries.
The SMART-T (Talents), SMART-I (Investors), and SMART-E (Senior Executives) categories will be removed, leaving only the SMART-S (Start-up) category for established startups that use technology and are in target industries in Thailand. The LTR Visa will be the primary option for high-potential foreigners
